Early Childhood Education is a major in the Career Connections Program. Students in this major are prepared for a variety of careers that provide education and care services to children. Early Childhood Education Careers, Early Childhood Education, and Advanced Early Childhood Education are the courses included in this major. The required school-based laboratory is an early childhood education facility. Formal presentations and portfolios are developed to showcase students' work. Connecting Experience is a required component of this major. Students should take this class if they think they might be interested in a career in any type of child care. If they are interested in majoring in child care, this class gives them the reassurance to be sure they want to go into this field. The students are able to gain a basic understanding of why children do things at different stages. They gain more knowledge about children and how to teach them. Some of the fun things they do with the kids are: paint, play doh, read stories, ride tricycles, teach them learning games on the computer, and many, many more exciting activities. Most Child Care programs in high schools in Georgia and Alabama only have their preschool children for 2 hours, 3 days a week. The average number of children they have enrolled is 8 to 12. Our Child Care class offers a 4 hour, 4 days (Monday- Thursday) a week program with 16 preschoolers. This gives them more exposure to being in the actual child care business. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), an integral part of the curriculum, enhances leadership development skills and provides opportunities for community service.
