Mrs.
Reys forensic science students are learning about forensic entomology
and what it takes to be a forensic entomologist.
The students are witnessing how insects can help determine how a person
died and their time of death. Students started off the unit by making
crime scene sites, each with one of four types of meat. The types of meat
included beef, pork, chicken, and turkey. The students encountered many
different smells and sights as the meat decayed over a period of a week.
Insects such as flies, beetles, and even spiders were collected off the
meat and will be used to create an insect collection. Students also had
to collect different maggots off of their samples to show the different
larval stages of flies.
