Mission Statement
Every child will be ready cognitively, socially, and emotionally to excel in school and in life.  Every family will be prepared to support that child – cognitively, socially, and emotionally.

We Believe:

  • A parent is a child’s first teacher.

  • When we identify families’ needs and goals, connecting families with resources to address those needs and goals, the life of the child, family and community is improved.

  • Our program must reflect the needs and goals of children and families.

  • When families take an active role in their children’s education, the learning is enhanced.

  •   All children can learn at high levels regardless of background, experiences, or circumstances.

  • We must create a nurturing environment that enhances each child’s individuality, creativity, self-expression, and cognitive growth.

  • We are all learners: staff, children, and families. We must provide high-quality, on-going, job-embedded professional development/coaching for staff to effectively accomplish our goals.

Learning together, striving for excellence,

and exceeding expectations. . .

The Phenix City Head Start program is guided by the principle of recognizing the wealth of learning that a child brings to our center. We are committed to building upon that foundation in ways that are developmentally appropriate.  Our staff embraces the view that each child is a unique person with an individual pattern and time of social, emotional, physical and intellectual development.

Our center offers a “hands-on” approach to learning.  This style of early childhood education is designed to foster creativity and expanded self-expression.  Teachers manifest their respect for children by encouraging them to think for themselves, make decisions, work toward their own solutions, expressing their own ideas and feelings.

Because Head Start is a comprehensive program, we also recognize that families are unique. We work with parents, through the individualized Family Partnership process. In this process we assist parents to meet goals they have identified by providing ongoing support, referrals (as needed), training and volunteer opportunities.  We provide assistance in seeking employment, obtaining housing, helping through crisis intervention, accessing community resources, or simply by making sure their children are healthy and prepared for Kindergarten.

We commit to:

·         Learning from the children and families we serve

·         Building relationships and partnering with families and community members to support families

·         Using multiple forms of data to inform and improve our work with children and families

·         Purposefully planning our work so that it is intentional, productive, and effective

·         Using our time wisely and intentionally to increase learning and school readiness in children and families

·         Supporting and encouraging each other to do everything in our power to make Head Start work for children, families and the community – improving the quality of life, here and in the world.

The Phenix City Head Start Center is committed to a comprehensive vision of preparing our children and families for transition to school. This comprehensive vision includes all aspects of school readiness. The services we provide address the health and safety aspects as well as mental wellness and disabilities.
