-Brainstorm ideas about the word.

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book:  Dream House

Imagine that you could design a dream house for your family.  In a paragraph, describe the house you would design and some of the unique features that you would include to make your dream house special.

-Identify negatives and correct double negatives in sentences on pages 372-373 (1-20). 

-Study for a Mastery Test on Negatives.

-Write an essay using the teacher’s prompt.

-Practice manuscript and cursive handwriting.

-Participate in the Book It Program.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Work on Accelerated Math.

-Read pages E14-17.

-Bring in items to test if it conducts or insulates energy.  Also, bring in items to test for magnetism.   We’ll test on Friday.

-Prepare a box with something inside it.  Do not tell what is in there.  We will try to guess by our senses on Friday.

Tuesday

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book:  Another Land

Pretend that when you awoke this morning, you and your family found you had been transported to another country.  Write a paragraph telling what country you’re in and what you’ll do next.

-Discuss avoiding using double negatives in sentences from homework assignment and page 381 (21-25).

-Study for a Mastery Test on Negatives.

-Identify adverbs that modify verbs and tell whether they tell, how, when, or where on pages 364-365 (1-20).

-Practice manuscript and cursive handwriting.

-Participate in the Book It Program.

-Review proofreading sheet for January 26-31.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Make line graphs to represent data and read and interpret given line graphs on page 266-267.

-Study for the Mastery test on Line and Double Line graph test.

-Define the vocabulary words on page E20:  element, compound, atom, proton, neutron, electron, nucleus, and molecule.

Wednesday

-Revise your rough draft on the Word of the Week in the Changing Lives activity book to make it better.

-Write down all assignments in planner, even if they are completed.

-Get your planner signed by your parent/guardian every night.

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book:  President’s Guard

You are a secret Service agent, and you job is to guard the president.  In a paragraph, briefly describe a typical day.

-Select the correct form of adverbs that compare and use them correctly in sentences on pages 366-367(1-15).

-Demonstrate knowledge of avoiding double negatives by taking the Mastery Test on Negatives.

-Practice cursive handwriting using the provided handout.

-Participate in the Book It Program.

-Work on Proofreading sheet for February 1-6.

-Write an essay using the teacher’s prompt during Exploratory time.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Make line graphs to represent data and read and interpret given line graphs on page 268-269.

-Understand the importance of the unusual behavior of water as it freezes to the survival of life on Earth by reading and discussing pages E18-19.

Thursday

-Proofread your Word of the Week writing to make it flawless.

-Write down all assignments in planner, even if they are completed.

-Get your planner signed by your parent/guardian every night.

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book:  Special Delivery

The mail carrier has just delivered a package addressed to your parents.  You can hear music coming from inside the box.  Describe what’s inside when the package is opened.

-Identify adverbs that describe adjectives or adverbs on pages 368-369 (1-20)

-Study for the Mastery Tests on Commas and Negatives.

-Participate in the Book It Program.

-Work on Proofreading sheet for February 1-6.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Complete worksheets on line graphs and double line graphs using worksheets from #3730 TCM pa. 27, Advantage Math Grade 5 page 68, and Reinforcement Master 42.

-Study for the Mastery test on Line and Double Line graph test.

-Work on Accelerated Math.

-Understand that all matter is made up of elements and compounds by reading and discussing pages E24-E25.

-Answer the following questions: 

What are the building blocks of matter?

How is a compound different from an element?

What is a chemical formula?

 

Friday

-Publish your final copy in the Changing Lives activity book.

(Activities from Changing Lives are given grades in Language as “Other Averages.”)

-Write down all assignments in planner, even if they are completed.

-Get your planner signed by your parent/guardian every night.

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book:  Zernonian’s Email

When you opened your email this morning, you had a message from someone who claimed to be from the planet Zernon.  Write a response to the message.

Form adverbs by adding ly or ily to adjectives forms of words and using well and good correctly in sentences on pages 370-371 (1-20).

-Demonstrate knowledge of using commas correctly in a series, to set off an appositive, and in direct addresses by taking Mastery Test 2, if necessary.

-Demonstrate knowledge of avoiding double negatives by taking the Mastery Test 2, if necessary.

-Participate in the Book It Program.

-Work on Proofreading sheet for February 1-6.

-Participate in DARE during Exploratory Time.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Use Dealing with Data from Mailbox Oct./Nov. 1986 on pages 34-39, if time permits.

-Demonstrate knowledge of Line Graphs by taking the Line/Double Line Mastery Test 1.
