Earth Science Week 2004 - October 10-16
This year, Earth Science Week will focus on Natural Hazards and the ways that Earth Scientists study hazards in order to understand their causes and minimize their impact on society.

Tuesday

-Discuss the Word of the Week:  Truthfulness

-Brainstorm ideas about the word.

-Write the ideas in the Changing Lives activity book.

-Write a rough draft for the Word of the Week in the Changing Lives activity book.

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book: Don’t Do It!

-Take a practice writing assessment by writing for 50 minutes on the writing prompt.  Expository Essay

-Practice cursive handwriting.

-Write a variety of letters using pages 190-213 and 521. 

-Know the parts of a friendly letter and business letter, as well as words you should capitalize, and how to punctuate the letters. 

-Begin a new folder Table of Contents.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Work on Accelerated Math.

-Go over Thursday’s homework:  WB19 Multiplying

-Choose a Computation Method in Workbook pages 20.

-Understand graphic Sources:  Lists on pages 78-79.

-Use organized lists to solve word problems, and write answers in complete sentences on pages 80-81and WB 21.

-Practice your timetables.

-Work on your individual Math Online Intervention and Take it to the Net website:  http://www.SFSuccessnet.com

-Research a natural hazard.  (Earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, tsunamis, hurricanes, violent storms, tornadoes, dust storms, floods, drought, wild fires, or sinkholes)

-Write a five-paragraph essay called “Earth Scientist at Work.” Pretend you are a geoscientist who studies a particular natural hazard. Describe the natural hazard; include how it forms and operates.  Describe how it affects living and non-living things.  What equipment is needed to study the hazard? What is a day on the job like? How do you educate the public about the natural hazard?  Do not plagiarize; write the essay in your own words. http://www.naturalhazards.org/

The Careers for Geoscientists video introduces the breadth of scope of the geosciences, including atmosphere, oceans, and the solid-Earth. Through interviews with individual practicing geoscientists discussing current projects, the nature of a career working in the geosciences is revealed. -Diagnose knowledge of Chapter 2, Checkpoint A on page 83.

-Mentally multiply any decimal by a power of ten on pages 84-85 and WB 22.

-Practice your timetables.

-Create a PowerPoint to be displayed on Parenting Day.

-Develop a book. 

-Design a safety poster.

-Publish your final copy in the Changing Lives activity book.

(Activities from Changing Lives are given grades in Language as “Other Averages.”)

-Write in the Daily Writing Composition book:  What’s That?

-Practice cursive handwriting.

-Write a variety of letters using pages 190-213 and 521. 

-Know the parts of a friendly letter and business letter, as well as words you should capitalize, and how to punctuate the letters. 

-Study for the Mastery Test on Parts of a Letter, including capitalizing and punctuating correctly.  Test is next week.

-Solve problems from the Spiral Review and Test Prep transparency and the Problem of the Day.

-Work on Accelerated Math.

-Review Wednesday’s work:  84-85 and WB 22

-Use rounding and compatible numbers to estimate products of decimal numbers, and identity estimates as overestimates or as underestimates on pages 86-87.

-Practice your timetables.

-Work on your individual Math Online Intervention and Take it to the Net website:  http://www.SFSuccessnet.com

-Mastery Test on Multiplying up to 3 digits (whole numbers and decimals) and Estimating Products will be next week.

Report cards go out on the 15th. 

Family Reading Night is October 19th at 6:30 P.M.

Wednesday, October 20th, is Parenting Day.  There will be workshops, a Red Cross Blood Drive (10-3), and activities to observe.

School Pictures will be on the 21st.
