The Chipmunk

Listen to the chipmunk!

Chipmunks are very noisy. People walking in the woods do not always realize that they are hearing chipmunks, for some of the cries that chipmunks make are like bird chirps.

Chipmunks rest in places like holes in trees, rocks, old rotten logs, bushes, and underground. Most chipmunks make tunnels and rooms under the ground that have entrances that are well hidden under rocks or tangled bushes. They are safer from predators in these tunnels.

There are lots of enemies that will eat chipmunks: owls, coyotes, hawks, snakes, and foxes.

Chipmunks like to live in places where the trees make the nuts it likes to eat. A chipmunk eats nuts, seeds, acorns, flowers, fruits, berries and shrubs. The chipmunk will also eat caterpillars, earthworms, and bird eggs.

If there were no chipmunks in forests, there would be less trees because chipmunks bury acorns in the ground and then forget where they buried them. Oak trees grow from the acorns the chipmunk buried.
