The Pond

It looks like some busy beavers have already started a home here! There are plenty of trees around this pond for the beavers to eat and use to build, too. The tall plants growing in the shallow end of the pond are called "cattails" and are a tasty treat for beavers!

The bottom of this pond has lots of squishy mud. The water is called "freshwater" and is not salty like the ocean.

This pond has lots of "basking" sites for animals that like to stay in the pond but rest on logs or rocks in the warm sunshine.

This habitat offers lots of water and trees, too. The thick cover of cattails would be inviting to ducks and geese that would build safe nests there.

Amphibians such as frogs, newts and salamanders would like all of this water. Lots of insects live in and near the water. You can also find snakes, raccoons, and bats near ponds like this one.
