The Raccoon |
|
Raccoons like a habitat with lots of large trees, water, and grain crops. Some grain corps are corn, wheat, and oats. A raccoon's habitat may be woodlands near water, farmland, or cities. Raccoons live in dens but don't make their own dens. They live in dens that other animals made and no longer use. Raccoons use several dens. Their favorite place for a den is in a tree. That means they will look for holes in trees made by woodpeckers and other animals. In the summer, they like to rest on tree limbs. Raccoons will eat grapes, cherries, apples, berries, and acorns. Raccoons also eat insects, frogs, and bird eggs. Raccoons are not liked by farmers. The raccoon will eat from the melon patches, cornfields, peanut fields, and corn fields. Raccoons are really good climbers and strong swimmers. They do not like to swim because the water makes their fur very heavy. They are nocturnal animals. That means they are most active at night. They have really good eyesight in the dark and they can hear very well, too. Foxes, coyotes, and owls are a few predators of the raccoon. Hunters also kill raccoons. Raccoons use their color to protect them. That is called camouflage. They blend in well with wooded places. They also hide in their dens to stay safe. |
